Criminal Justice

Address issues relating to the Texas House Committee of Corrections, Criminal Jurisprudence, Homeland Security & Public Safety, and the Senate Committee of Criminal Justice, including concerns of elder abuse, cyber security fraud, and scams against older Texans.

Health & Human Resources

Addresses issues relating to the House Committee of Human Services including those that protect Medicaid and Medicare benefits for older adults, advocate for nursing home reforms, training for health care professionals, greater incentives for in-home care, improved medical care for indigent older adults, mental health programs, and other issues relating to improved health care for older adults.

Human Services

 Addresses issues relating to the House Committee of Public Health such as funding for expanding community service programs, including transportation for rural and urban areas, funding for respite care, expanded Senior Center porgrams, and others that involve the physical aspects of older adult care.

PIIFS (Pensions, Investments, Insurance, & Financial Services)

Addresses issues relating to the House Committee of Pensions, Investments, and Financial Services including all pensions operated by the State of Texas; privacy and identity theft; insurance needs, especially as they affect older adults; and any matters concerning investment or financial institutions.

State Affairs

Addresses matters that pertain to the administration of state government affairs and the organization, operation, regulation, and management of state agencies.  These may include the following:  matters pertaining to veterans of military and related services; matters pertaining to adult guardianship and grandparent protection and support; matters dealing with support for older adults with disabilities; mattters affecting older adult property owners’ rights to include property taxes, annexation, and zoning; matters pertaining to voter rights of older Texans.

Utilities & Natural Resources

Addresses matters that consider all agricultural, environmental, natural resources and utilities issues, especially as they affect older adults.  These may include problems and issues particularly related to rural economic development and the provision of and access to infrastructure; matters pertaining to the conservation of energy and natural resources; matters pertaining to the state’s water supply, storage, availability, movement, and development of new sources; matters pertaining to air, land, and water pollution and regulation of waste disposal; developing alternative energy sources and increasing energy efficiency throughout the state; regulation and deregulation of electrical and telecommunication utilities.

Administrative Committees

Communications

Responsible for  the preparation, printing, and distribution of journals, Bylaws, Elections & Credentials Manual, and Policies and Procedures Handbook. Prepares statewide media releases for the Speaker’s approval and recommends branding and messaging opportunities for the organization.

Elections & Credentials

Responsible for overseeing matters related to the statewide election and certification of the representatives from all AAA regions; conducts resolution priority voting and the election of TSHL Officers. Prepares and distributes the biennial Election Kit to all AAA Directors.

Legislative Action

Identifies and recommends the resolutions to be moved forward to floor debate after having been passed by the appropriate Legislative Issues Committee (LIC).  Train and assist TSHL Cmembers to track legislation, work with legislators and legislative staff, and cooperate and coordinate with other organizations.   Chairs of the LICs serve on the Legislative Action Commmittee.
