Texas Silver-Haired Legislator
First Term – 2021-2023: Chair: Pensions, Investments, Insurance and Financial Services; Secretary, Legislative Action Committee; Member: Elections and Credentials Committee
Advocating for seniors has been a personal priority for Gary Gerstenhaber for several decades. After a long career in commercial real estate, he opened the Austin/San Antonio territories for Senior Connections, a company that provided counseling services for nursing home residents. His commitment to this population led to volunteer work with the Texas Health Care Association, most frequently with their advocacy committee. He later spent several years introducing the nursing home industry to pharmacogenomics, a testing service that determines optimal medications and combinations based on an individual’s genetics.
At 65 years young, he applied those experiences to another avenue of helping seniors. He became a licensed Health, Life and Accident insurance agent. He now focuses on helping folks understand Medicare benefits and provides expertise on Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans in pursuit of the best match for each client.
To further advance his desire to serve Texas’ seniors, he accepted an appointment to the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature in 2021. His experience in these many related fields offers a 360-degree view of issues facing senior Texans with the goal of bringing these issues to the attention of legislators along with solutions and a strong belief that not all solutions require money to resolve the issue.
In his spare time, when he is not on the golf course, Gary is an active member of the Downtown Capital Area Rotary Club, serves as treasurer of Congregation Tiferet Israel and volunteers at a local food pantry. He has been married to his wife, Karin, for 30 years. They have a son and daughter-in-law who reside in Austin.
