Sharon Kulig

Dr. Sharon Kulig, Ph.D. holds a doctorate from the University of Florida at Gainesville, a Master’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Following two years of pre-doctoral fellowship at the Gainesville Florida Veterans Administration Hospital and two years of post-doctoral study at the Shands Teaching hospital, Dr. Kulig was one of the ten selected in national competition to receive a United States Office of Education Fellowship, a position she chose not to accept in favor of talcing a faculty position at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston (UTMB) where she achieved the rank of tenured associate professor.

At the University of Texas Medical Branch, she was awarded a Merck Foundation Teaching Award for her development of The Physician ‘s Developmental Quick Screen for Speech Disorders and other interdisciplinary training materials. She has also served as an adjunct professor for The University of Texas at Austin and as a clinical supervisor for graduate students of Our Lady Of The Lake College in San Antonio and Texas Woman’s University in Denton.

Dr. Kulig is a former Vice President of The Texas Speech Language and Hearing Association and has chaired two national committees for The American Speech Language and Hearing Association which three times awarded her Certificates of Appreciation For “Making A Significant Contribution To The Profession Of Speech Language Pathology.” She has also served as President of the San Angelo Area Speech Language Pathology/Audiology Association. She has been named a Woman of Distinction by The Girl Scouts Of America. The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health awarded a scholarship to Angelo State University in her name for having served on its Board of Directors since its inception and on its Medical Advisory Board. The San Angelo Schools’ Foundation has also originated a scholarship in Dr. Kulig’s name “In recognition of contributions Dr. Kulig has made to her community”. Dr. Kulig has served well over a decade as a member of the Board of Directors Of The San Angelo Symphony Society. She has served as well on The Child Advocacy Board Of Advisors, on the Sonrisas Board Of Directors; and on the Board of Directors of The Area Council PTA.

Dr. Kulig is a past president of San Angelo Area Physicians’ Wives and their former District Councilwoman. She is a past Vice President of the San Angelo Symphony Guild She developed and chaired for the San Angelo Chamber Of Commerce, Project Embrace, a military support committee for the leadership and staff of San Angelo’s Goodfellow Air Force Base. Dr. Kulig served for years as as a lecturer for The Laura W. Bush Institute. Her presentations have included: “Chemonesia-Chemotherapy And The Brain”; “What Science Has To Say About The Brain And The Mechanics Of Happiness”; “Cleopatra: A Study In Resilience “; “Changing Your Mind: Executive Functions OfThe Brain ‘s Frontal Lobe”; “What Is Pickle ball And What Does It Have To Do With Strengthening The Brain?” and “Good Grief What Physicians Need To Know About The Brain In Dementia vs Grief”. Dr. Kulig has taught classes on the subject of Retaining Recall While Aging Well for ASU’s Adult Continuing Education Program. She also taught for ASU the freshman seminar, Avoiding Rookie Mistakes and twice she has spoken on the subject of brain health for conventions of The Girl Scouts Of America.

Dr. Kulig specializes in cognitive retraining for dementing and traumatically brain injured patient populations. She co-authored along with two Ph.Ds. the graduate text, A First Course In Dysphagia; she originated The Spectrum Project (Speech Language Pathologists Enabling Communicators to Reinforce and Undergird Memory); she co-wrote “Life Long Brain Power: A 31 Step Workbook”; and she co-authored the freshman text, “A Journal and Appointment Book For Avoiding First College Semester Mistakes. ” She’s the author of ”The Red Hot Mamas ‘ Year Of The Brain” for medical center circulation and she was the developer and presenter of the year-long hospital based series, “The Year Of The Brain”. Dr. Kulig screen wrote and appeared in the ASU Ram Television program series, Aging Well. She is the author and co-author of many newspaper articles on the subject of brain health.

Dr. Kulig is the widow of the late Dr. Martin Joseph Kulig, M.D., Ph.D. She is active in the development and circulation of grief management materials for church usage and has served on a number of grief recovery teams dedicated to ” … the passing on of comfort received”. She is the mother of three children who live in the DFW Metroplex: Kara Kulig Tibor, M.S., a speech-language pathologist in private practice; Kristin Kulig Crowley, JD, MBA; an attorney as well as a staff member of an interior design firm, and Kyle Kulig, MBA, a vice president of the Ft. Worth based oil company, Double Eagle. Dr. Kulig’s avocations have included quarter horse trail riding, tennis, originating pickleball and book clubbing programs under the auspices of The Laura Bush Institute For Women’s Health, and originating the teaching of Mah Jongg As A Brain Facilitation Modality in cortjunction with Angelo State University’s community extension programming. Her 8-week courses on the topics of”Aging Well “, “Using Grief and Recovery In The Same Sentence”, and “Heaven: Living Vertically In A Horizontal World” have been repeatedly offered by Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist Churches of her city, where she also has originated and served on numerous grief management and assistance teams. With her family, which includes seven grandchildren, Dr. Kulig especially enjoys time spent together at her homes in West Texas, the Dallas Ft. Worth Metroplex, and at her family retreat in the mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico.
